    Installed the bee package 9 days ago. They are making beautiful white comb! Noticed these two strange structures on one frame. Any concerns?

    10 frame hive with package installed - 9 days after installation. Obviously the nuc is much further along. Not seeing any eggs yet. When is it normal to observe eggs after package installation?

    @William,

    I would expect to see that queen laying from the package by now.  I see the queen in the last picture.   Hmm.  I'd say start to look for a new one or if one of the members has a swarm cell or queen they can provide you.   At the very least what you can do is transfer a frame of eggs from your nuc hive so they can supercede her but that will take about 3-4 weeks to see eggs if successful.  If you want I have a nuc split that I just made yesterday with some swarm cells on a frame - you are welcome to one of those cells to hatch out a new queen and mate.  They were pretty ripe - not sure if they will still be there tomorrow or Thursday.

    Also the one frame picture is burr comb - cut it out - its a waste of bee's effort but clean it before they extend it.

    Thanks Kurt! I opened the hive today again for a closer inspection. I believe that I see eggs now. Can you confirm?

    William - Confirmed! You have a laying queen and yes those are eggs.

    I figured I'd look for your queen too- Found her on one of your pictures -it was fun looking!

    If you are a beginner or a old pro - these are good pictures to practice and fun to look at to find that queen and looking at a new hive's progress.

     Try to find queen in William's original pictures - Spoiler alert -don't open my pictures if you want to try to look at the pictures to find her yourself.

    This is a great set of pictures for the club to learn from -   I have attached the annotated picture showing queen and eggs.  The close up pictures of eggs are superb too!

    Great pictures! Thanks for sharing.   Kurt

    Hi, when would you expect to see that white capping? I installed a nuc last Saturday (20-May). I have been monitoring them ever couple days. I see yellowish comb, pollen, water, larvae, eggs, we have a queen. And what I think is capped brood. But it looks brown. I seem to think this is not quite right....

    Renee: Pictures will help identify the various normal cappings that see.  White cappings are typically honey, brown capping is brood.  Everything sounds normal in your hive.   /k

    Thanks, I realized after I posted that this was the pic gallery. :)

    I do think everything is looking normal so far. Just newbie panic, I suppose. Appreciate the follow up.
